Wave power is an emerging sustainable energy technology.  Wave power, the idea of actively extracting useful energy from water waves in oceans and lakes, is both an old idea and a new area of active research and development.  The idea goes back at least as far as 1799, when the first wave power patent was granted.  It was revived by Professor Stephen Salter at the University of Edinburgh as a response to the oil crisis of 1973.  More recently, wave power has become an active area of research in response to the deepening realization, at the beginning of the 21st century, that fossil fuels are limited and we must find economic and environmentally sensitive alternatives

SeaStar Wave Power, Inc.was founded to develop and market small-scale wave power devices to provide sustainable and environmentally sensitive energy to the waterfront off-grid market.  This market includes residences and businesses, onshore and afloat, year-round and seasonal - homes, hunting and fishing lodges, marine stores and fuel stations, fish buyers and fish farms, boaters (especially sailboaters), and special applications (eg. navigation and scientific devices).

The off-grid market has few energy options.  It is now served primarily by fossil-fuel gasoline and diesel generators which contribute to environmental degradation and carry significantly higher costs.  For this market, wave power devices can significantly reduce fossil fuel consumption and thereby reduce financial and environmental burdens while contributing to energy security.

Where wave power devices can be used they have a number of advantages.  They work during the night and stormy weather, when light levels are low and the need for power is great.  They work noiselessly and safely.  They have wide scope for deployment and are accessible much of the time.

SeaStar Wave Power, Inc. is a for-profit startup company based in the Vancouver area of British Columbia, Canada.
